Holograms were mass replicated on photopolymer films using  high-volume automated systems starting in the mid/late 1980s.  Production techniques and materials improved throughout the 1990s culminating in fully-dimensional, full-color  images.

They are considered collectible due to the innovative technological processes used to manufacture them, their subject matter and their commercial purpose.
